Signs something is wrong

Before you request a repair

Confirm power, that both supply valves are open, and that the drain hose is not kinked. If water is leaking, stop the cycle and shut the valves. Do not open a locked front-load door by force, and do not reach into a tub of water with the machine plugged in.

Start with the cycle, not the motor

A washer that hums and will not spin may be trying to drain first. Many machines refuse to spin while they still sense water. A clogged coin filter, a kinked hose, or a standpipe that is too low or too high will imitate a dead motor.

Say whether the machine is top-load or front-load, and whether it ever drained on the last attempt. That is more precise than saying it is broken.

Older houses and bouncy floors
